Optical Burst Switching (OBS) is a focus in research to realize the IP over WDM. This paper illustrates the principle of OBS and the stucture of OBS network, as well as a detailed analysis of the impact on OBS network performance of different resource reservation mechanicals, switching node designs and switching scheduling algorithms. Based on above analysis, the paper proposes a new integrated scheme for evaluating the OBS network performance, which is composed of two-layer operations. The one is switching node layer, in which the multiple-plane OBS switching node design is introduced, which could achieve the burst lost rate at 10-6 level and better tradeoff between performation and cost. The other is network layer, in which the traffic-balancing scheme is used to optimize the network performance.Chapter one points out the principle of OBS: seperation of control and data. The control protocol is transmitted before the burst and reserves the wavelength and switching resource for the coming burst, which asures the "transparent" transmission of the burst. Then four schemes for resource reservation have been introduced, as well as the different contention resolution mechanicals.Chapter two analyses the OBS network performance, including resource reservation, priority support and scheduling algorithm, with emphasis on their impact on the burst lost rate. The contradiction between switching node cost and performance is presented because of the expensive price of TWC (Tunable Wavelength Convertor).Chapter three proposes our integrated scheme. A new multiple-plane OBS switching node design is introduced, which solves the above contradiction by increase the switching bandwidth in the switching node, while excludes the TWC. Also the traffic-balancing scheme is presented. With simulation, we could see the scheme performs better than its peers.
