Generalized NRD-guide is investigated comprehensively in the helps of the NRD-guide concept and the parallel slab waveguide theory. The characteristic equations and modal fields for the generalized NRD-guide are derived by using multimodal transverse resonance technique. A novel Y-branch NRD-guide power divider/combiner is then proposed in this paper. Two NRD-guide discontinuities, i.e. symmetrical step and misaligned step in the direction of propagation, and Y-branch NRD-guide power divider/combiner are characterized with full wave mode-matching technique. It is noticed from numerical results that: for the symmetrical step NRD-guide discontinuity, rare intermode coupling is observed between two fundamental modes LSE10 and LSM10; but for the misalignment discontinuity, mode conversion happens inevitably. In operation frequency band of 25.5GHz-29.5GHz, the proposed Y-branch NRD-guide power divider/combiner shows good power transmission for both fundamental modes, however, the intermode coupling can not be neglected in this design. Calculated results are found to be in a good agreement with its counterpart obtained by Ansoft HFSS.
