In order to adapt fierce competition and fast change of the market, workflow management system is being introduced into enterprise business affairs, among which, how to access and allocate background resources of enterprises has been to the research emphsis. Web Services and Grid computation are emerging Internet-based distributed computing technology in the nature of network resources integration, remote processing and cross-domain collaboration, and now becoming the next generation supporting technology to construct heterogeneous information exchange platform among enterprises.Modeling and managing stateful resources with Web Services, Globus Toolkit 4 is a reference implemetation of WS-Resource Framework (WSRF), which supports resource management and provisioning mechanisms required in service-oriented application and distributed infrastructure . The design and implementation of a workflow management prototype system based on Globus Toolkit is presented. The inner mechanism of workflow resources access with stateful service is fully discussed. First, the actualities of workflow management systems are presented and their shortcomings are pointed out, which explain the reasons of bringing Web Services into WFMS. Then, the framework of the prototype system and its functional modules are surveyed. Further, as the rationale of resource access with Web services, WSRF specification and its Globus implementation are discussed, and Globus Java WS Core is addressed in detail. After that, the particulars of the prototype system developed by the author are described at length, which include the formal description of workflow based on UML, the visual modeling of workflow, the storage, analysis, and delivery of the workflow model. An instance business flow running on the platform is presented as an example to describe the running mechanism of workflow procedure. Finally the prototype is evaluated, the advantages are analyzed and the future work is simply discussed.
