A video tracking apparatus in the project named 4KTD-170 Four-Axis Rotational Platform for Stabilized Tracking and an improved one in the project named Video Terminally Control and Guide Seeker are introduced in this paper. The main contents of this paper contain three parts: the total design and each module of the video tracking apparatus, the improved one and the correlation tracking algorithm.The first part is based on many video tracking systems researched before. Its main purpose is to design a system with independent modules, explicit functions and reasonable distributed resources. The total design introduces structure, working principle of the rotational platform and the video tracking apparatus. The implementing of each module is introduced in principle. Some key problems are discussed with emphasis, such as video signal storing, DSP boot loading, asynchronous serial interface extending etc. Before introducing the second part, this paper analyses some shortages of the original one in four aspects: video signal capturing and storing, the principle of synchronization, programmable logic device and digital signal processor and its peripherals. Afterward, each module of the improved one is detailed in comparison with the four aspects narrated above. The debug results indicate that the improved video tracking apparatus surpasses the original one in integration, generality, flexibility, cost, power consumption and so on.Finally, some factors are discussed, that affect real-time performance and stability of the correlation tracking algorithm. Combining theoretical analysis and simulation, this paper proposes a novel correlation tracking algorithm. Experiment indicates that the algorithm has real-time performance, stability and adaptability.
