Wireless LAN is the outcome of the development of computer and communication technologies. At the same time, it's an important part of wireless network tecnoligies. Access point (AP) is an important entity of wireless LAN. We design and implement AP so that we can make our research on networks and protocols deeper and more flexible.In this paper, the concept of wireless LAN and related technologies and standards, especially IEEE 802.11 protocols and security wireless LAN, are presented firstly. Then the design plan of AP based on MPC860 and Linux, which is come from the analysis of AP's functions and knowledge of embedded systems, is brought forward.The emphasis of this paper is to design the hardware system of an AP, which includes not only circuit board design but also modules design in FPGA. The details of design, simulation, implementation and test are shown and the structure and parameters of the whole hardware system are given. Furthermore, some work on low layer software, which includes replanting BSP and operating system and designing driver for wireless interface device, is involved.Of course, the method of developing application programs on this platform is introduced. At the end of this paper, the real-time performance of system and real-time application interface (RTAI) are discussed.
