The application of CAD technology focuses on two aspects. One is the 2-D drawing and 3-D modeling; the other is the analysis of capability and design of configuration. The drawing and modeling technology of CAD which is applied well in practical has been developed well. While the analysis and design technology can just be used on some simple calculation such as static force and dynamic force analysis. The CAD system which can be used to drive the whole design process of product with knowledge is called intelligence CAD (ICAD) based on knowledge.Founding a rational and effective knowledge express model is the key point of ICAD system. The knowledge express method is chose according to the knowledge characteristics. The express ability, maintainability and reason efficiency should also be considered. It is difficult to choose a method which can found a rational knowledge base of mechanical design knowledge because of its variety, complexity and indeterminacy.This paper used XML to express the mechanical design knowledge. The markup language which only belongs to the mechanical field has been created by making use of the self- description characteristic of XML. The XML which conquers the defects of traditional express methods can express the structure and hemi-structure knowledge effectively. Also it can syncretize the traditional express methods such as the product, frame and semantic method. The independent syntax knowledge base which separates from the reason program is founded by making use of DTD. The knowledge base system is easy to be maintained and extendedThis paper presents the research method of knowledge driven on 3-D CAD system. The system uses the XML to express the knowledge on the window platform with the object-oriented method. The system makes full use of the mutual environment in CAD system, and the enlighten search method to found high search efficiency reason program. The system can be used to design, check shaft and 3-D model.The system has been proved to be proper and feasible through programming, debugging and testing and has realized above-mentioned function successfully.
