Network management is based on network topology discovery. Management of heterogeneous network, fault location in network, management of LAN and campus network are related to network topology discovery. This paper focuses on the main network of Wuhan university of science and technology. First of all, it analyses the importance of the network topology discovery. Then, it pays most attention to the technology of network management and topology discovery.According to the seven-layer OSI model, network topology discovery contains both discovery of the network layer and discovery of the data link layer. This paper proposed a network topology discovery algorithm based on SNMP. Several key problems such as multi-addresses routers and links of switches are discussed in details. After giving the describiption of BGP and OSPF, it also present network topology discovery with them.This paper also analyses the importance of monitoring the performance of network(bandwidth utilization and lost package rate). The measurement of network could be classified into the following two categories: active measurement and passive measurement. We describe both of them and give a comparison. Then SNMP-based measurements of bandwidth utilization and lost package rate are given.At last, the campus's network topology is monitored by the SNMP-based algorithm. The bandwidth utilization and lost package rate of switches can be monitored. The correctness of the algorithm for topology discovery has been proved by the test.At the end of the paper, the questions to be solved in the future research are put forward.
