Because part of the America returned Boxer indemnities were appointed to be used in education, a climax of studying in America arose after 1909. Then Chinese students throughout the United States set up schools, district student union, and even the whole United States student union. They devoted themselves to publication, which commented on China and the world's situation, and introduced Western culture and the emerging technology. It has great significance. One of the most influential publications is Quarterly Report of Chinese students in U.S.(Hereinafter referred to Quarterly Report), which edited by 'Chinese students union in U.S'. At that time, this publication is an important window of understanding the view of Chinese scholars in U.S. to international and domestic issues .It is also a goal channel to learn western academic culture. This thesis attempts to study on Quarterly Report, and discuss its impact to China modern society. The whole thesis consists of three chapters. Chapter 1 is mainly about the general situation of Quarterly Report. It contains evolution, columns, Editing and publishing. The newspaper is first named America Studying Report, later renamed Annual Report of the Chinese students in U.S.. In 1914, it became Quarterly Report. It lasted 18 years, published 53 issues. Its character is that its style changed with editors, which was different every year. Due to financial reasons, it once stopped publication. Because Pan Guangdan and other members made great efforts, it resumed publication. To its publication, the annual chief editor and other staff put a great deal of energy.Chapter 2 discusses the relation between Quarterly Report and New Cultural Movement. 1915, Yi Dingxin published an article named elementary introduction of meliorating characters and language. He called on improve characters and Change the status of separation between language and the characters. He believed that to achieve this goal", languages must revolute, and then it can be people's languages". The major idea of his article is similar to Hu Shi's meager opinion of Literature improvement, but it is two years earlier than the latter. It is the first article promoting new culture at home and abroad. It guided road for the coming new cultural Movement. In addition, the Quarterly Report published many articles supported the New Cultural Movement, which wrote by Zhang Yaoxiang, Meng Xiancheng, Chen Da and others . It also published polemic articles between Wu Mi and Qiu Changwei in column form. Through anglicizing these cases, my article illustrates how the Chinese scholars in U.S. enlightened the new cultural movement.Chapter 3 mainly concentrated on the other content of Quarterly Report, including education, foreign relations and so on. American education developed so much, many branches of which had a leading position in the world at that time. Therefore, the number of Chinese students majoring in education was particularly large and the content on education was also much informative in Quarterly Report. Many American latest achievements on educational subject such as emerging branch of vocational education, educational psychology, children's education, moral education were introduced to China through Quarterly Report, which had a direct influence on the establishment and development of the educational subject of Chinese university. The discussion in Quarterly Report on problems such as limitation of population growth, environment protection, resources recycling has great significance and is far-sighted. In addition, since the founding of Quarterly Report coincided with the outbreak of World War I, Chinese students in U.S. regarded the world pattern, Sino-Japanese relations, Sino-American relations as their focus. They raised a lot of opinions which benefited the future direction of China so much. The appearance of Quarterly report provided a good plat form for Chinese students in U.S. to deliver opinions and communicate with others, since there were little Chinese materials in U.S. then. A lot of writers had keen eyes, sharp viewpoints and well knowledge in their fields. Many of them became pioneers in Chinese academic later, this has something to do with their active discussion on different topics in Quarterly report.
