IP Set-Top-Box(STB) is new generation equipment for IPTV terminal. There are two normal kinds of architecture for IP STB system: ASIC+MCU based and DSP based system. The former is made up of an ASIC within video decoder, and a MPU, It is much easy to design IP STB system, but the video decompression algorithm is not able to updata. The later can be implemented by a multi-media processor. It is more flexible and easy to updata the algorithm. This paper focuses on the programmable design method using multi-media processor, and also focuses on multi-processor parallel process algorithm.Around the two topics, the paper is divided into three parts. In the first part, the normal methods of IP STB system designing is introduced, the architecture of IP STB system based on TMS320DM6446, and the architecture of High Definition IP STB system based on TMS320DM642 and TMS320DM6446 are also described in detailed. All the modules of the STB are discussed, including power module, start up configuration module, DDR2 and Flash memory module, Ethernet module, audio CODEC module, High Definition video Encoder module and HPI parallel conmmunication interface.Secondly, the method and flow of embedded system design are discussed, the key technology in migration of bootloader is also discussed.In the third part, parallel algorithm of HD AVS decoding based on multi-processor is explained.
