In Computer Animation, character animation is expressed and driven by motion data. There are several ways to generate motions, including keyframe animation, motion capture, dynamic simulation, motion reusing and so on. Motion reusing technique has been the hot field in computer character animation. And Motion Adaptation, which is one of important techniques in motion reusing, enriches the way of generating motions and has a high research worth in computer character animation. In essential, motion adaptation is a high-level motion editing technique, the goal of which is to adjust existing motion data to generate new motion according to users' request. Because of its high-level editing, motion adaptation is easy to use and interact with, leading to more efficient animation producing. At the view of technique, there are mainly two issues in motion adaptation. Firstly, the adapted motion must maintain the characteristic of the original motion. Secondly, the adapted motion must satisfy the users' request. In this paper, we mainly discuss the motion adaptation techniques in computer character animation. We mainly introduce and implement two motion adaptation techniques: interpolation based motion adaptation and spacetime constraint based motion adaptation. In interpolation based motion adaptation, we use techniques such as motion displacement mapping, cubic spline interpolation and so on. In spacetime constraint based motion adaptation, we use techniques such as motion displacement mapping, B cubic spline, non-linear constraint optimize and so on. We use DNLS(damped non-linear least square) and SQP(sequential quadric programming) in constraint based optimization. We have integrated both motion adapt techniques into our motion master platform Nova, and both of them work well as a way of interaction-controllable motion edit tool.
