As the main working medium of solid lasers, laser crystals have wide application in industry, research and military fields. 2μm waveband laser crystal Tm: YAP is a promising laser material due to its advantages like high dopant concentration, high emission section, high transferring efficiency, etc.Tm: YAP crystal was grown by the Czochralski technique. Our research focuses on the improvement of the growth process and parameters, growth defects and spectral properties. The dislocation in Tm: YAP crystal was studied through chemical etching. In Tm: YAP crystal grown along b-axis, it was found that there are areas with different dislocation etch pits densities on the (010) plane. The cause of this distribution is the function of stress distribution during crystal growth. The effect of dislocation distribution on the spectral properties was studied, the results indicate that the area with low dislocation etch pits concentration has better fluorescence performance. Twin was found in the crystal grown along c-axis. The existence of scattering centers in the crystals was investigated by He-Ne laser beam, SEM and TEM technique.
