Because Yb:YAG crystal possess excellent spectra and laser performance, with the advent of intense, narrow-band optical pump source-InGaAs LD and the demands for laser diode pumped solid-state lasers toward high efficiency, high-power, compact and miniature have stimulated the interests in Yb:YAG laser crystal. In this paper, the high-pure materials synthesis of Yb:YAG has been obtained by the way of solid phase reaction. Yb:YAG with different Yb3+ doping concentrations were successfully grown by the Czochralski method and the optimal growth parameters were found, the growth atmosphere and the annealed conditions were studied. Explored the crystal processing technology and the piece of crystal of optical homogeneity was detected by its interference stripe after being processed. The crystal defects were studied by optical method and chemical etching method. The experiment measured and analyzed the spectrum characteristic, calculated the relative spectrum parameters of Yb:YAG crystal by Judd-Ofelt spectrum analysis theory, and explored the reason of "visible fluorescence" phenomenon. In room temperature, the laser properties were measured. Using 940nm InGaAs LD pumped the 8mm×8mm×1mm Yb:YAG thin disk, in the condition of 1W cw pumping power, obtained the output power of 112.3mW at 1.03μm, with the optical-optical and slope-efficiency of 11.2% and 35%, respectively.
