As a branch of satcom domain, VSAT is a great breakthrough in the sense of personal communication, and its application is more and more broad. But at present, VSAT equipments are variety, maintenance of which is complex. And the area VSAT terminal built at is almost along with low population density. So, the period of updating hardware is very long. Traditional VSAT indoor terminal combining with embedded Linux system will have high characteristics of real-time and reliability. Friendly man-machine interface can be provided to consumers, and communication performance can be changed without replacing hardware instrument. Configuration files can also be downloaded into FPGA in long-distance. In a word, this kind of VSAT indoor terminal may adapts various environments.Hardware platform of VSAT indoor terminal adopts the method of integration of MPC8250 and Modem Block (FPGA). MPC8250 realizes supporting embedded Linux system and communicating with Client. FPGA is responsible for dealing with data information. Embedded Linux system is in charge of scheduling process, managing memory and providing network interface. While developing embedded Linux system on PowerPC, cross compiler environment is needed for transplanting Linux kernel. This environment is also needed for application software running on PowerPC. Application software runs based on controlling hardware. Under Linux, hardware can be operated as files; it brings convenience to development of application software.This paper detailedly described the process of design VSAT indoor terminal based on embedded Linux from practice angle. It will bring benefit to the development of VSAT communication system.
