The amazing growth of the Internet and telecommunication is powered by the high performance network equipments demanding increasingly higher levels of processor performance. To keep up with this demand, new processor designs must incorporate innovative architectural concepts. Multi-core multi-threading is one of the most promising techniques for enabling this new class of processors.Multi-core technology is challenged in architecture, software model, communication technology between different cores, operation system designe and security design field; at the same time, huge potential exists in promoting the processing performance. This paper introduces the most popular multi-core network processor-RMI XLR Serials NP based on MIPS core technology and its new characteristics. The software architecture of router based on multi-core is also presented.Complicated network equipments require the support of real-time operating system. The operating system is very important in the whole network protocol software as system platform software. Today, how to make the high level commercial network software to run in different system platforms and how to make the software more transplantable become much more important. The problem can be solved by presenting a component between the operating system and the application software. This logical layer is used to shield the difference of different operating systems and hardware; this layer also realizes some functions of operating system such as memory management, exception monitoring, file systems and so on. The above discussion is the concept of virtual operating system. This paper discusses the basic function provided by virtual operating system and introduces the realization of memory management and virtual file system.At last, opportunity and chanllenge faced by the system software industry in China was discussed.
