Hybrid Video coding algorithm is an attractive solution for the video compression. Among the video coding algorithms, Wavelet coding can transform the data into multi-resolution and encode them into scalable data stream; and Fractal coding is able to exploit self-similarity in images. Therefore, it is very important and significant to research on the combination of wavelet and fractal video coding. On the other hand, the video streaming over wireless networks is very appealing as well as challenging. Video streaming typically requires a minimum, continuous bandwidth guarantee and stringent bounds on delays and jitters. However, the available bandwidth is highly variable in wireless network due to wireless channel fading, interference and nodes mobility. In this dissertation, firstly we proposed a fractal wavelet hybrid video coding algorithm: FEZW (Fractal Embedded Zero Wavelet). Based on the EZW (Embedded Zero Wavelet), this algorithm applied fractal technology into the inter-frame prediction and avoid motion vector estimation and compensation.Secondly, we focused on how to improve the performance of video streaming over wireless networks. In order to improve the DSR (Dynamic Source Routing) protocol, we introduced the flow count state of each node into it. In this case, the improved DSR protocol used both flow count and hop count as routing metrics. Finally, after thorough studies and precise experiments, we draw a conclusion that the performance of video transmission over wireless networks can be improved by using FEZW algorithm with improved DSR protocol.
