With the development of the multimedia and communication technology, video streaming tends to have more and more practical application areas. But now, the system of video streaming just stands at the beginning stage, and it faces so many adverse factors, such as heterogeneous network structure, heterogeneous user access, bandwidth dithering and high complexity of video coding. In order to solve those problems, this paper researches the way to improve the scalability of video coding, so as to ensure and increase the usability of video streaming. Furthermore, this paper adopts the wavelet video coding technique, studies a wavelet based high -powered scalable video coding, and verifies it by simulating experiments designed for a video streaming system.Firstly, the paper analyzes the theory of wavelet and its coding technology, and compares various schemes of wavelet based video coding. It is considers in this paper that wavelet video coding has mature theory and its capability exceeds the traditional coding techniques based on DCT, and that the inter-frame wavelet filtering scheme has the best performance among various wavelet based video coding schemes.Secondly, based on researches of the scalability of video coding, this paper introduces the inter-frame wavelet video coding MC-EZBC, which is recommended by the MPEG Standard Organizaion, and evaluates its scalability. The experiments prove that MC-EZBC surpasses the traditional scalable video coding in PSNR, spatial and temporal scalabilities.Thirdly, according to the characteristics of video streaming system and wavelet video coding MC-EZBC, this paper brings forward an optimized video streaming coding architecture. And in the aspect of rate control, the paper also puts forward a Rate-Distortion optimized rate allocation scheme. The experiment proves that this scheme enhances the decoded image quality of video streaming. Finally, summarization has been made for the work done in this paper, and some promising research directions are also given.
