The construction and management of learning resource is the key of E-Learning. Currently, there has accumulated a lot of learning resource on the network. But there still exists many problems, such as simple structure, semantic deficiency, lowly effective sharing and mutual operation between heterogeneous systems. Describing learning resource to make users understand consistently is an effective way to resolve the problem.The paper introduces ontology into the management of learning resource, mainly researches on building of domain ontology, and by utilizing ontology achieves the semantic description and query of learning resource. The main constibutions are summarized as follows:Analyzing the several commonly used methods for building ontology, to resolve the existing problems during the procedure of building, the paper proposes a prototype method based on spiral model to build ontology. The method attaches great importance to requirement analysis and document standardization. At the same time, it gives prominence to the attribute which the boundary of domain is hazy. By building from the bottom up, it emphasizes the evolvement of ontology.Combing with the character of learning resource in content, structure, and application context, the paper extends the learning object metadata (LOM) standard. By using the extended metadata to describe the relationship between domain knowledge and learning resource, it achieves the mapping between domain ontology and learning resource, and analyzes the mapping mechanism between them.The paper presents a learning resources management framework based on domain ontology to describe learning resource at the levels of knowledge and semantic, so as to achieve sharing and mutual operation. The framework comprises application layer, semantic layer, and storage layer. The application layer provides interfaces for users. The semantic layer mainly implements functions of semantic query, semantic analysis and semantic reasoning. The storage layer includes domain ontology, metadata database, and learning resource repository. Based on the framework, this paper also analyzes the semantic query mechanism.At last, a prototype system based on the framework is developed.
