With the development of Next Generation Network, VoIP is increasingly deployed by the telecommunication operators. And the life-force of VoIP lies in its value-added applications. VoiceMail service is the very value-added service that draws great attentions from the customers, and then the telecommunication serveices providers are eager to accept. SIP is becoming the major telecommunication protocol in the field of VoIP taking advantage of a great many of its merits, such as simplicity, flexibility and extensibility etc. SIP is a powerful tool for fast development of extensible value-added services. This project aims at development of VoiceMail system for business use on the SIP-based VoIP softSwitch platform. According to SIP's feature of function distribution, the VoiceMail system is designed with a distributed architecture. It has several modules, including SIP signal control module, media server module, data process module and so on. What's more, the system is implemented by sofeware together with harware, which is suitble for business use.Firstly, this paper reviews the current situation home and abroad, and introduces to VoIP-releative concepts and SIP-releative protocals. Secondly, an comprehensive analyse is given on the function demands of the VoiceMail system. Then, the paper puts its emphasis on the design of each module of the VoiceMail system. Based on the previous detailed work, the system is implemented using C++ language. Finally, the paper gives a summarization on the architecture, the capabilities, and the performance of the system.
