With the goal of sharing resources and cooperative computing, Grid will be the infrastructure serving us in all the fields. The central parts of the infrastructure include high performance computing devices, storage devices, and expensive scientific apparatuses. Currently, cluster system becomes appealling architecture to build high-performance computers by its preeminent scalability, availability, reliability, and cost-performance ratio. With the plentiful deployment of clusters and anormorrous applications on them, one of emerged problems is how to collect the computional power of distruted clusters to provide a more powerful computional platform for many kinds of Grid applications such as distributed high-performance computing.This thesis bases the research of inter-cluster communication mechanism on IntraGRID, a decoupled architecture of Grid computer architecture. IntraGRID intergrates distributed clusters into a single computing device for Grid applications. Because it couples even more loosely than a cluster, the algorithm of applications above should adapt themselves in order to get the advantages of the platform, such as to group processes through communication-sensitivity so that processes can be scheduled reseasonablely among different clusters.One of key components of IntraGRID is its commucation system, which provides low-level protocols for distributed high-performance computing environment. IntraGRID communication system consists of cluster internal communication protocols and external communication protocol over inter-cluster network. Both internal and external communications have a same protocol interface. External communicaton protocol is provided by Grid Gateway based on gateway mechanism which enables message-passing between clusters.External commucation using Grid Gateway to deliver messages between clusters gains high comunicaton performance. Grid Gateway connects cluster interconnects and inter-cluster network enabling clusters to communicate each other through Grid Gateway delivering packets to external network or interconnects. The number of gateway nodes can be configured manually so that external data can be balanced through multi-gateway mechanism.This thesis introduces IntraGRID and the architecture and characteristic of its communication system, analyzes the Grid Gateway mechanism specificly. Some key issues of Grid Gateway are presented, including global identificaiton, communication semantic, flow control, multi-routing mechanism, and load balance. Performance evaluation and conclusion are presented at the final chapters.
