Texture synthesis has been extensively investigated by both computer vision and computer graphics communities during the past twenty years. However, the input and output are normally 2D intensity texture images. If the subjects are 3D surface textures the traditional 2D synthesis techniques cannot provide the information required for rendering under other than the original illumination and viewpoint conditions.The 3D Texture Synthesis deals with 3D texture synthesis and editing under different illumination and viewpoint conditions. It works on representation data extraction, analysis, synthesis and texture rendering. The 3D Hole Filling is an important sub-area within the 3D Texture Synthesis and Editing. It will play an important role in 3D texture editing.In this thesis, we first introduced the 2D synthesis methods, and then we proposed our 2D texture synthesis method based on pied-based texture synthesis and patch-based texture synthesis. And in the following we introduced the 3D synthesis framework. The framework essentially combines surface representation methods with 2D texture synthesis algorithms to synthesize and relight new surface representations. According this framework for the synthesis of 3D surface textures, we explored our 3D texture synthesis and extended it into multi-dimensional space to design 3D Hole Filling algorithm. In the end, woo showed a whole 3D Hole Filling experiment and proved that our 3D Texture Hole Filling algorithm offered a good performance.
