It is believed that the wireless MIMO technology will be one of the key ones that realize the high-speed broadband wireless communication in the future and has wide application prospect in the third generation or beyond third generation mobile communications. But the performance of the MIMO system has deep relation with the properties of the multi-path signal in that environment, particularly affected by the correlation, the time spread and the azimuth spread of each path. Therefore, in order to achieve potential huge capacity of the channel, gain prospective performance, choose appropriate system configurations and design excellent algorithms for signal processing, it is very important to realize and master the characteristics of channel in the indoor and the outdoor environment. Consequently, to evaluate the performance of the system and the algorithms, besides some essential practically measurement, appropriate channel models must be built. We firstly surveyed the background and the evolution of MIMO channel models. Comparison is given between other techniques and MIMO wireless communications to demonstrate necessity and inevitability of research on MIMO. A variety of concentrated problems and fundamental questions are introduced.Research on MIMO channel model is beginning and principals' problem of the thesis. By focusing on the fundamental problem of the characteristics of wireless fading, we introduced a few MIMO channel models and their correlation characteristics, compared and surveyed the modeling methods and figure out their apply condition. Then, base on the determine channel modeling methods, we present a frequency-selective MIMO fading channel with von Mises probability density function, which is used to characterize non-uniform angle-of-arrival caused by non-isotropic scattering. Then we analyze partial cross correlation function of proposed model and proved the model theoretically. We also present a low-complexity general channel simulation model for both transmitter diversity case and downlink beam-forming case. Finally, we implemented the MIMO channel model by DSP, introduced the software and hardware platforms of the channel simulator.
