While news reporting is a process of journalist's representing of events occurred or occurring by using journalistic language, it's inevitably colored by reporter's values and subjective judgments. But in the eyes of journalistic professionalism, the fatal mistake of news reporting is unfolding editors' or writers' subjective values overtly in news discourse. The solution to this contradiction is to understand the relationship between language and ideology and acquire applied nature of journalistic language by conducting an ontological research on linguistic signs, and get the values and views conveyed implicitly through subtly manipulated journalistic language which makes reporting seemingly objective.By referring systematic functional grammar, appraisal theory as well as speech act theory, this dissertation carries out critical analysis on some news discourses published in domestic and international newspapers including People's Daily and Washington Post through an integrated model. I aim at revealing some most commonly-used devices of constructing opinions in news discourses by analyzing macro-structure, syntactic process, and lexical choice respectively. The significance of this research is twofold: on the one hand, it will produce audience with high level of media literacy, help them develop critical consciousness in information-receiving process so as to have a better understanding of news texts; on the other hand, it will produce salted journalists by equipping them language skills to convey sound evaluation, which will be conducive to harmonious society.
