Recently Space-time codes, which is a channel code technology that bases on multi-elements antenna, has become a rising research direction in communication fields. It can not only satisfy the wireless transform requirements of high frequency efficiency, but also has strong ability to exterminate multi-paths fading. So it can greatly improve the quality of communication services and system capacity under multi-paths fading channel.Now the main three kinds of Space-Time Coding that have been proposed are Layered Space-Time Coding, Space-Time Trellis Coding and Space-Time Block Coding. There into, Space-time block coding is a new technique that combines coding, modulation and transmit diversity. It has been an ideal candidate for improving wireless communication performance and increasing data rates in systems with bandwidth constraint.As a rising technology, STBC has obvious superiority on performance and its encoding and decoding is relatively simple. STBC can be appli- ed in many aspects, one of which is that it can be applied in the OFDM PHY Layer of 802.16a protocol.This thesis detailedly researches on STBC, especially on the encoding and decoding arithmetic of Orthogonal space-time block codes (OSTBC). OSTBC is a key technology which is suitable for future 3G and beyond 3G mobile communication under wireless multi-paths fading channel. It has simply encode and decode algorithm and full diversity. And the Space-Time coding scheme that has been recommended in IEEE 802.16d protocol is researched in this thesis too. In the scheme STBC is combined with OFDM in frequency selective slow fading channel of 802.16d. Because many wireless channels are multi-path channels in practice, in order to advance the system performance this thesis improves on the Space-Time coding scheme of the protocol.
