Along with the development of GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) mobile telecommunication network, more and more users advanced their requirements for network service quality. While the operators also devoted their attentions to improving network performance instead of increasing the network coverage. By means of systematically network optimization, the operators can fully utilize existing network equipment , resource and capacity in order to improve the service quality as well as their benefits to the maximum extent.Due to the interference, in the area with intensive traffic the frequency resource is still insufficient after adopting the traditional multiplexing methods such as cell splitting, band expanding and FDMA. This disadvantage is resolved by the appearance of GSM900/1800M. With the development of GSM900/1800M, the GSM1800M network is allowed to take in more and more subscribers to share the traffic load and ease the burden on GSM900 and finally enhanced the capacity of the entire network. Consequently the optimization of GSM900/1800M is the focal point of the network optimization nowadays. This paper is expanded around the network optimization project in Harbin launched by CHINAUNICOM. Common principles of network optimization are introduced firstly. In this point we mainly focused on GSM900/1800M optimization principles. And then some practical methods to resolve regular wireless network problems such as coverage, capacity, interference, switch and drop rate are summarized. Finally the GSM900/1800M dual band network is optimized in both aspect of parameter and coverage. There is obvious improvement of the network performance after the optimization.
