Computer science changing with each passing day has motivated the development of geographic information system greatly and brought infinitude of energy. With the rapid development of microelectronics and photoelectron technologies, the development of computer has come into the mobile age. Mobile computing system represented by personal digital assistant (PDA) products has been used widely. It is one of the main tendency for mobile users to operate computers when moving, connect to the network anytime and anywhere in different ways and combine themselves and immense digital space seamlessly. The purpose of this paper is to develop an intelligent information system for community based on PDA; the system integrates the embedded calculation, mobile computing and GIS technology. First of all, according to the characters and functional requirements of the intelligent community, with adequately understanding and analysis of the current solution projects, the paper proposes the design project for the intelligent community information system based on embedded GIS. The project has realized the interactive map and makes the map link to database, in order to realize the fast search and show the local information of the inquired spot, the project can calculate the distance and area. Second, according to the design project, it realize the following functional modules :(1) the server (PC-GIS) functional module; map layer creation and data synchronization;(2) the client (PDA-GIS) functional module: system management,graphical data management,attribute data management, information query, measurement of area and shape, and system help. Third, researches the R-tree algorithm, by using of it, can quickly process spatial data construction and show the location on the PDA fastly. At last, as an embedded GIS platform, it has been theoretically and experimentally verified to meet the needs of practical applications. It has realized the mobile computing technology to apply to traditional space information service, has changed the traditional mechanism of service based on position completely. This system can change the laggard investigate mode of the current intelligent community information.
