I/O interconnection architecture and system network is the key factors that impact the I/O performance.Traditional PCI bus has been used for tens of years, an important innovation of I/O interconnection and architecture technology is ongoing. Now, a series of new high performance I/O interconnection technologies such as PCI Express, RapidI/O, HyperTransport and InfiniBand have been drawn up.PCI Express technology has been phased in for its high performance, outstanding reliability, availability, and serviceability. PCI Express architecture provides reliable packet transmission across all three functional layers: physical, data link, and transaction. It supports diplex CRC for transaction and Data Link layer packets, replay and correction, hot-plug, and also provides perfect error handling and reporting mechanism.So, the dissertation discussed I/O interconnection architectures in detail and researched the keys of PCI Express technology. The achievements of the research included:(1) Made a prediction for the development of I/O interconnection technology by the research of several I/O interconnection technoloies.(2) Made a design project of a high performance I/O controller (Root Complex) based on PCI Express by the research of PCI Express system architecture.(3) Achieved a design of PCI Express interface, done some logic design and functional simulation, researched the keys of PCI Express, including packet-based transactions, ACK/NAK protocol, flow control, RAS technology, and so on.(4) Designed a test platform used for the test and verification of high performance I/O controller (Root Complex) and the PCI Express interface.
