The newspaper was the pioneer media of the news release in China. Intend to save the nation, the Chinese intellectual diffuse the advanced knowledge and thought via newspaper to resist the cultural invasion of western great power. With the development and progress of the newspaper; the news, comment, supplement and ad have become the four basics of the modern newspaper. The supplement—initially considered as "buttock of newspaper", played an important role to make the newspaper survive and develop. It has turned into the battlefield of the new cultural movement and demonstrated great impact in both prosperity of the Chinese revolution and enlightenment of ideology of the Chinese revolution. From the "Top three supplement" in the "4th May" period to in the 1930s', the supplement has been always an impellent in the Chinese modern revolution.Chapter1. Briefly introduction of the history and development phases: Shen Bao, founded by a British man, Major in 1872. In Aug, 1911, Wang Dungen initiate Free Talking, the supplement of Shen Bao, as most of the other supplement that time, Free Talking published literary or recreative articles so as to make the newspaper more entertaining, which, indeed gained quite a few new readers.Chapter 2. Analysis of the early characteristic of Free Talking and the influence of that: In 1931, a grand reform was executed in Shen Bao, Free Talking was in charge of Li Liewen, under the support of enlightened writer such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun, Free Talking published many sharp-styled articles that pointed at the darkness of the society, and organized many discussions upon literary and social issues as well, which has a far-reaching influence in the society. Unlike before, Free Talking presented a fairly free arena to the enlightened writers and patriots after the reformation. And furthermore, it brought up many of youth enthused over literature, who eventually effected the revolution of modern literature and innovation in thought. So the authorities suppressed Free Talking.Chapter 3. Introduction of the important person during the procedure of reformation and Analysis of the reasons why reformation succeeded: Tao Xingzhi, Li Liewen, Lu Xun and Mao Dun.Chapter 4. Introduction and analysis of characteristics of Free Talking in the later period: 10th, Oct, 1938, Free Talking resumed publishing along with Shen Bao, however, they were controlled by Japanese invader and the Kuomintang government, many retroactive articles were published at that time.
