| Shen Bao (1872-1949),which had the longest history,the biggest influence and had been popular for 77 years, was compared to as The times and The New York times"in old chia. From style to content,Shen Bao enjoyed a wide range of content including comment on news,articles in special colums,special supplement and memoir,service for readers,filming,cartoons,publishing of advertisement etc. Shen Bao could be regarded as the model of the modern newspapers.people in shanghai used Shen Bao to refer to all kinds of newspaper at that time. It witnessed the social changes of china as well as the ups and downs of its own business.The period from 1912 to 1934 can be regarded as the one of Shen Bao's great prosperity under the management of the president of Shi Liangcai.After the breaking out of the September 18 Incident of 1931,the Shen Bao,which as usually cautious of great political events,displayed a progressive tendency to fight positively against the Japanese invaders and to ask for democracy.Especially in the Song hu battle, Shen Bao reported a lot about the bravenesses of the soldiers in the front and gave lots of supports.These reports and supports made the Shen Bao become the center of the public opinion in the whole country.Afterwards ,this period is considered as the golden period for the Shen Bao ,which was due to the newspaper's attaching importance to the news comments and establishing li liewen as the main editor of the Free Talk's supplement,who was only 28 years old and just came back after studying abroad.Li liewen(1904-1972) was a famous writer,editor and translator in the history of modern literature in our country and his working experience as a chief editor of Shen Bao.Free Talk in 1930s was the most glorious career in his lifetime.He carried out a big reformation to the Free Talk's subissue of Shen Bao form 1934 to 1935.He declared that"we will neither indulge in the vulgar interests nor use high-flown words to disseminate any empty idea,but stand firmly on the advanced modernization".with his effort, Free Talk soon became the mainstream position of the new literature;Lu Xun,Mao Dun,Ba Jin ,Lao She and Yu Dafu published lots of commentaries and scribbles on it,which caused great influence on the whole society.Therefore, Free Talk became"a subissue standing in front of the times"quickly.Li Liewen united and nurtured a group of famous writers.Lu Xun,Mao Dun,Ba Jin ,Lao She and Lin Yutang who got his support ,encourage and protection and became the leaders of the new literature after may 4th movement.However,few people know about the fact that Li Liewen was an excellent editor and that he did remarkable contribution to the New literature history of our country and that he extended the scribble.Here I will review and summarize systematically about his edit thought on the Free Talk of Shen Bao in three parts, hoping that it can give enlightment to the subissue editors of newspapers nowadays.The first part of this paper is composed of a brief introduction to personal information and a brief review of various of Free Talk in different periods.
