To resolve the data consistence issue arisen in mobile computing, mobile device manufacturers come up with a lot of data synchronization proposals. Examples are HotSync by Palm, Intellisync by Pumatech and so on. These proposals benefit the popularization of mobile computing. However, due to lack of interoperation capability, they are limited to work with certain data types, on required networks, using exclusive devices. To overcome the issue, an international organization established by Ericsson, IBM, Motorola, Nokia and Starfish jointly has initiated a workgroup for data synchronization. SyncML, as a result of joint effort by the organization has been accepted widely as an industrial standard specification for data synchronization.Embedded system is an application-oriented, computer-based, scalable system, which is used extensively in computer systems that have strict requirements on functionality, reliability, cost and power-consumption. The most important feature of an embedded system is real-time response. In this paper, we analyse the capability of SyncML protocol based on the understanding of formal specification of SyncML and propose appropriate extension for embedded system development. An implementation is also given based on the platform of PDA phone. The paper first introduces SyncML synchronization specification and characteristic of embedded system development. We also compare SyncML protocol with other sync solutions. In next section, we illustrate the requirement and design of a SyncML client on PDA phone as well as the development and implementation result.
