GSM radio planning network is based on the transmission analysis of the base station. When we calculate the coverage area according to the transmission power and antenna configuration of the base station, normally we calculate the downlink only, because it's unnecessary for us to think about the uplink of the GSM. But the CDMA is fully different from the GSM system. There is not any difference between the coverage and capacity because of the combination of the channel and user. The more service capacity will lead to the less cell area, and the more interference. So it's really a dynamic network that we face in the CDMA system. Network planning engineers can't add the additional frequency simply any more to realize the more capacity. So it's a difficult question for discussion to find some new functions and tools to improve the capacity and coverage of the cells. It's very important for us to learn about the limiting factors of the improvement of the capacity and coverage of the cells. Coverage range is normally limited by the uplink, and capacity is limited either by uplink or by downlink. It's based on the actual situation. The main function to improve the service coverage is link spending, which provide us the academic base to define the size of cells and the number of the base station. To improve the service coverage, some useful functions are antenna with energy, antenna with preamplifier, transmission diversity, multi-sectors, and transmission station. Some functions are contributed to high capacity, but the others are different. The effective way to add the capacity is using the more channels, but when no more channels are used, some other functions are available, such as...
