Global communications business has shown explosive growth trends, and the requirements of network bandwidth are increasing. In WDM networks, even a few seconds of network disruption could lose a lot of data, so WDM networks need to add protect links, and improve the network's capacity of tolerating, in some cases that links can not be used ,but the networks can still transmit data transparently.The author of this paper is charged with the Chengdu Branch of China Unicom optical transmission network's reliability analysis and optimization projects. Summing up the paper on the basis of the project.This paper makes introduce of WDM technology , its related concept and its development, proposes the necessity of the high reliability requirements in optical networks; This paper also studys the commonly used methods of optical network reliability analysis . The paper studys the analytic techniques and methods of the reliability and related problems under various circumstances of protections in WDM networks, it also makes a research into thereliability analysis methods of SDH Ziyuhuan. Based on these analytical methods , under the case of China Unicom Chengdu branch's integrated operational transmission networks that using SDH's two ring structures, starts from the failure conditions of nodes and links, the paper calculates the integrated operational network's reliability, tests the reliability practically ,and gets a lot of testing data, acomplishes the integrated Chengdu branch of China Unicom optical transmission network's reliability analysis by combinating the two techniques, according with the results of analysis, the paper presents the measures to improve the network's reliability.The proposed improvements has been implemented in actual projects.
