The eddy current retarder (ECR) is an auxiliary braking device that transforms kinetic energy of moving automobile into thermal energy and dissipates it into atmosphere according electromagnetic principle. Through practice use, ECR can remarkably improve the security of automobile. The nonlinear adaptive fuzzy control design method is put a high premium in this thesis which is applied for the control of the retarder. By now the lack of direction of theory in the control of retarder is the actuality in the domestic country, so the purpose of this thesis is in fact to give a support in both theory and technology for domestic enterprise to develop the controller of ECR that they have their intellectual property.The structure, the working principle and the control methods of ECR are simply introduced in this paper. At the base of the detailed analysis of the dynamics and thermodynamics model, I deduce the two nonlinear typical models for rotating speed of ECR and the temperature of ECR. As the human controlling experience ebbed into the new H~∞adaptive fuzzy control method, then this method applied in the two nonlinear typical models in order to make the controlling method of ECR more intellectual and improve the performance of ECR.In order to verify the new adaptive fuzzy control method, I design a block of experimental circuit. At the same time, the paper focuses on how to convert the theoretical adaptive control method into the practical control program. How to implement the calculation of fuzzy member function and the transcendental function and how to get ECR rotating speed are also discussed in details in this paper.Finally an experiment is done on the designed circuit and does some analysis of the experimental data.
