As the development of technology of electron-warfare and the need of the exploration and track for objects in outer space, the two-dimensional system of phased array antennas (PAA) has became one of the new research subjects. The features held by PAA are fast scanning and beam deflection, which are not provided with other traditional antennas.Based on the principles and characteristics of PAA, a U-shaped micro-strip patch antenna (MPA) is chosen from the different kinds of antennas. The micro-strip patch antenna is used as the phase element of a two-dimensional system of wide angle scanning PAA. Some research works have been studied as follows.(1) The principles of PAA is analyzed, in addition, the function and the size of element are discussed. These above provide the theories for the choice of the element for a two-dimensional system of wide angle scanning PAA.(2) According to the factors which affect the bandwidth and the beamwidth of MPA, a U-shaped micro-strip patch antenna is selected as the element for a two-dimensional system of wide angle scanning PAA.(3) With the aid of the cavity model method and Model-matching method the feature of wide-beam for the U-shaped micro-strip patch antenna is researched. As a result, the semi-analytic solutions have a good agreement with the parameters of the design. The numerical results computed by the finite element method also verify the feasibility of the design.(4) The radiation of the U-shaped micro-strip patch antenna is experimented at a far-field darkroom. Furthermore, the radiation pattern is given. The measured datum show that the beamwidth of both E-plane and H-plane reach 110° , moreover, the bandwidth of the antenna is wider than 20%( VSWR <1.5), which testify the practicability of the antenna.
