Wireless sensor network (WSN) is a late-model wireless network with non-infrastructure and self-organization. With the development of micro-electronic, sensor technology and communication technology, WSN develops rapidly and has made a great progress recent years. What's more it has been used in some military and civilian applications successfully. WSN has a bright future for its extensive use. Many active routing protocols used in other networks are not suitable for WSN because of the characteristics of WSN such as hardware resource limitation, power capacity limitation, data-central, self-organization, multi-hop routing, dynamic topology, densely distribution with numerous nodes etc. So we have to design an application-specific protocol.In the thesis, wireless sensor network application for hydro-generator condition monitoring, break through the mode of wire centralized monitoring model which is widely used now. The equipment state monitoring system based on wireless sensor network can better and more conveniently achieve equipment condition monitoring, pre-diagnosis, life evaluation, re-modeling scheduling and process track or reduce stop time. The main contents in the paper are as follows:Firstly, briefly introduce the wireless sensor network.Secondly, study the exiting routing and MAC protocols for wireless sensor network. The design goal and challenge of wireless sensor network protocol were discussed, and then, analyzed the exiting protocols, which provide the basis for future research.Thirdly, the superiority of the wireless sensor network application for hydro-generator is analyzed. The wireless sensor network system architecture is designed, and the key technologies are discussed. According to the characteristics of wireless sensor network application for hydro-generator condition monitoring, a protocol is designed. In the paper, the protocol adopt special route optimize algorithm and TDMA time slot assigning algorithm, make node enter low consumption or sleep state in order to reduce the consumption; Aiming at choice the mechanism of cluster head, multi-hop routing and the mechanism of MAC, the existing LEACH protocol is improved. In the LEACH-NEW protocol, the mainly improvement of the LEACH protocol exhibits as follow: For the sake of balancing the network load , The network choose the clusters based on the residual energy; we take multi-hop communication between sensors instead of single-hop communication, which results in the reduction of energy consumption of clusters; The new protocol finds the path to the cluster head with the minimum cost,using an algorithm similar to flooding to propagate the cost information and greedy algorithm to find the lowest cost link; The algorithm for assigning TDMA time slot reduces overall delays of network.Finally, we simulated the protocol with NS2. The numerical results show that the new protocol has a longer lifetime and more efficient than the LEACH protocol.
