| Traditional computer-aided design is mainly focused on the phase of detail design, which makes the designers ignore the phase of conceptual design. However, conceptual design also plays an important part in product function, product quality, product reliability and the degree of customer's satisfactory. Consequently, conceptual design as the early stage of product design is concerned by more and more researchers in recent years.Conceptual design is a part of design that from abstracting to identifying the essential problems, namely, establishing function structure, searching for solution principles, combining solution principles, selecting suitable combinations, firming up into concept variants, evaluating concept variants against technical and economic criteria. It is a phase with full of creativity. Innovation is the only way to conform to an incredible product market; innovation is the only way to make the products become more competitive.The method of System Engineering is used to study the process of conceptual design. From the analysis, the conceptual design process is separated into several parts. Database technique is used to design and link each design model, and then, each sub-problem is solved. Thus, the product's conceptual design is finished.In the paper, the process of conceptual design is studied. Based on the process model of "Function-Principle-Structure", conceptual design process model "Function-Physical Principle-Principle Structure" is constructed. Function modeling layer, Physical Principle modeling layer and Principle Structure modeling layer are constructed. At the same time, some analysis and research is done on the above modeling layer. Function database, Physical Principle database and Principle Structure graph database are constructed based on setting-up rules of the database and basic theories of the relation database.
