Target detection algorithm which is based on image processing technology is mainly researched in this paper. After weighing the demands of precision and speed in the process of target detection, the method of target detection is divided into two parts which are rough detection and precise detection. It is called rough detection that the target and the background are divided by the preprocessing of gradation, adaptive threshold division, after that the rough range of the target is determined through extracting object characteristic. In precise detection, NC or moment matching algorithm is chosen according to the relationship of successive images. After seeking the partial of sketchy scope acquired by rough detection, the target central is precisely confirmed by projection law. NC matching algorithm is highly compatible and accurate with regard to linear variation of gradation. Moment matching algorithm is accurate when rotation and proportion of image is changed. This method can not only detect accurately but enhance speed of target detection. At last, TARGET sub-pixel subdivision of target localization is put forward, as a result increasing the precision the difficulty on hardware is solved. Experiments indicate our strategy is fit to the request of the dynamic target detection and tracking in the shooting range.
