Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are believed to be the first of the top ten technologies that will change the world in the future. However, limited computing, memory, communication capabilities, and especially the severe energy constraints present major challenges for such a vision to become a reality. Moreover, these unique properties of WSNs make traditional mechanisms used in traditional networks cannot be applied directly in WSNs. Specifically, WSNs can only be deployed after many key technologies, one of which is security issues, to be solved. As one crucial research directions of security, attacks against routing layer of WSNs may cause the whole networks disabled. So it is significant to study secure routing issues of WSNs.According to the analyses of the security of existing routing protocols of WSNs, this thesis modifies a routing protocol which shows best performance among existing routing protocols. Then, a secure routing protocol is designed besed on this. The research is composed of three parts: in the first part, based on the research of issues related to security and routing, this thesis analyses the threaten of routing layer and the security of the existing typical routing protocols in WSNs, and then draw a conclusion that GEAR surpasses others. In the second part, modified GEAR in energy consumption, and evaluated it by NS2 simulator. Simulation results show that the modified scheme consume less energy. This modification counteracts the added energy consumption that the security design to GEAR will introduce. In the third part, the thesis focuses on strengthen the security performance of GEAR. Therefore, a new secure routing protocol named SGEAR is designed. SGEAR is a protocol based on location pairwise keys. Then the thesis compares SGEAR with existing secure routing protocols in many aspects. Results exhibit that SGEAR possesses of better performance and SGEAR is suitable for static location aware wireless sensor networks. Finally, the work done in this thesis has been given, and the future work has been brought forward.
