There have been a lot of researches on performance tuning of computer, which is vital for reducing hardware cost and maintaining stable business transactions. Nevertheless, performance tuning of computer is a complex task, which involves many interdependent factors, such as operating system, database system, middleware, applications.This thesis addresses the issue of computer performance tuning through the study of computer system of Tianjin Taida Cardio Vessel Hospital. Focused on the AIX operation system and DB2 database runned by the hospital computer system, the study is base on the system operation rather than its application program. To achieve this, it is necessary to have scientific make-up of the computer functions and a proper system set-up. The main work concerned includes:(1) Computer performance tuning should begin with a thorough test of the hardware to eliminate possible hardware defects, which will impair the performance of the operational system.(2) Then the bottleneck and rush hour of the system must be detected through the performance analysis of AIX operation system.(3) After that, a database examination should be done during rush hour of the system. Performance tuning of DB2 must be based on monitoring the operation and performance of the database itself, and study of the performance of SQL statements and analysis of the problems probed. A delayed database response often indicates a poor performance of the whole system. So, data base monitoring can help identify the problem caused by the database itself as well as those by other factors. After that, appropriate measures can be taken, such as adjusting the database memory performance to make effective use of memory, re-setting the computer parameters to reduce occurrences of waiting events, re-allocating storage room to lessen the competition between disk I/O, re-deploying the database table and index to improve the efficiency of inquiry service, and monitoring details of Database operation to detect and replace the SQ of highest cost with the economical ones.(4) Following the analysis of AIX and DB2 mentioned above, a detailed plan of system tuning could be worked out.(5) The result of the tuning program in Tijing Taida Cardio Vessel Hospital proves to be a success. On one hand, the performance of the computer system is improved greatly. CPU utilization is reduced from 99% to 79%, Pagespace utilizationis reduced from 300 pages to 3 pages, Size of the free memory list increased to 500M. On the other hand, data fed back from the computer terminals presents a more efficient and smooth system as business in hospital runs with speedy prescription and admission procedures.
