New century provides not only new opportunities but also new challenges for the development of fundamental education. Most of developed countries are attaching much importance to education reformation, which calls for the reformation of fundamental education curriculum as the core. In our country, new curriculum reformation especially emphasizes active learning attitude, cooperation, problem solving, information gathering and synthesizing, and utilizing high-tech etc. In our new curriculum, the emphasis on integrative and interdisciplinary learning happens to share the same view with project-based learning. At present, project-based learning is very popular in America and Europe. Though it just sets about in our country, many scholars on education have already paid more attention to it. The author tries to illuminate the essence, element and design about project-based learning at the angle of activity theory, which to provide better guidance for fundamental education reformation and quality education.There are seven parts in this thesis, including prologue, theoretical recognition about project-based learning, development of project-based learning, introduction about active theory, discussion and design of project-based learning under the framework of activity theory, specific case design of PBL, problem and discussion.Chapter 1 , mainly discusses research background, research significance, and research content.In chapter 2, the author firstly gives concepts of "project" and "project-based learning" on the basis of analyzing some related data, then introduces the elements and operation procedure of PBL, finally analyzes education ideas contained by PBL, and similarities or differences between PBL and other learning modes, which produce confusions.Chapter 3, discusses the development background of PBL, and development of PBL abroad or in our country.Chapter 4, firstly gives full introduction of activity theory, then illuminates basic principle of utilizing activity theory and advantage of directing education design, finally gives a framework of utilizing activity theory.Chapter 5, at first discusses advantage, which to utilize activity theory to direct PBL on the basis of chapter 4 , then analyzes the element at the angle of activity theory, finally provides a model of designing PBL under the framework of activity theory, and analyzes, designs every stage of PBL, especially activity of main body in the every stage.In chapter 6, the author provides a special design case on the basis of chapter 5. The theme of the case comes from Chang Qing garden middle school in Wuhan, which is fit for PBL. But because of restricting of time and some practical situations, this design casehasn't been applied.Chapter 7, points out some lack in this thesis, at the same time, demonstrates shortage of applying PBL, and gives some countermeasure.Project-based learning (PBL) is a new learning mode. In the last years, many education scholars have do some research on PBL from many different angles. This thesis adopts some research approaches, which are mainly literature research and design method. The author demonstrates, designs PBL at the angle of activity theory, which try to provide a new research angle for PBL.
