Network services provide the facilities for terminal users to use thefunctions of network. As more and more social activities are relying onnetwork services, the management of network services is becoming a hot topicin the network management community. It's an important function of networkmanagement system to monitoring the services in the network to ensure theircontinuous operation. The network services in this context not only refers to the applicationlayer services directly provided to terminal users, such as WWW, FTP, POP3,SMTP, but also refers to the basic services which normal network operationrelies on, such as DNS, PPP, dialup Service, and login services in enterpriseintranet. So the monitored objects include not only the performance metrics, such as availability, response delay, data transfer rate of service itself, but alsothe hardware and physical attributes, such as CPU and memory usage, innertemperature of the hosts or devices providing the service.Generally, large-scale network management systems are too complicatedto deploy and operate, but small network management systems are notfunctional enough to adapt to the variety of services and expansion of network. After comprehensively analyzing current technologies and applications ofnetwork service testing systems, the thesis proposes a distributed, highperformance and scalable service management architecture based on WebService. We establish unified service model based on common attributes ofservices;specify service description language based on XML syntax;anddevelop the methodology and general algorithms for service monitoring andmonitoring results analysis. A web based prototype system is developed andtested on a production network to demonstrate the feasibility and effectivenessof the architecture.
