In many situations there is a need for mobile devices to collect different types of data and transmit this information to a central storage. In such machine-to-machine (M2M) situations, this process should be automatic with no need of user interference. The type of collected information can be in many different formats depending upon the actual situation, and may for instance be a binary file, an XML-file, voice recordings, pictures, video recordings, etc. The mobile device should be able to transmit measured data at a defined time (probably dependant on some alarm detections or a predefined time schedule), to a central data server.Tele-home-care is a typical application of M2M technology. It's widely used in the health care area. Based on a heart disease scenario situation, this thesis describes how such a system can be designed, and discusses some requirements in the scenario such as data speed, security issues.Based on the requirements in the scenario, this thesis focuses on evaluation of suitable modules from the specification of protocols such as TCP, UDP, HTTP, FTP, FTPS and so on to be used for automatic transmission of such recorded information, and the specification of mobile communication system(GPRS, EDGE, UMTS) with which via Internet send this information to a central web-based server. Some methods of how to keep the security of data are also recommended in the thesis.By the use of new chosen wireless data modems that supports GPRS communication;the thesis designs a prototype in which an ECG of patient is transferred successfully from the module to a web-based server with some programme work in the prototype. It shows the possibilities of this new technology can be used in the tele-home-care.The possibilities in new technology should be evaluated with respect to M2M communication, in order to give some recommendations for a future system design.
