Nowadays basic urban traffic establishments suffer great pressure by quickeneddevelopment of economy and urbanization. Contemporarily low efficiency andmanagement disadvantage make it more difficult to make up for the lack of trafficestablishments. Thus it makes great significance to develop Intelligent TrafficSystem(ITS). The Vehicle Auto-Navigation System(VANS) is a crucial component ofthe Intelligent Transportation System, whose main function is supplying the driverswith their position, velocity, moving direction and surrounding geographiccircumstance information by the aid of electronic map in order to approachdestination fast safely and accurately. The Vehicle Auto-Navigation System is constituted by two parts, the hardwareand the software. The hardware includes GPS receiver, PDA and other instruments. Itake charge of coding the software interface, using Windows CE.net as developmenttool and eSuperMap, which is developed by Beijing SuperMap GIS Technologies Inc,as embedded GIS platform. In this paper, the author introduces both the basic theory of GPS/GIS and theconstitution and principle of the vehicle auto-navigation system, then the realizationof the software system in detail, which is followed by the sum-up and analysis tosoftware in application. The Vehicle Auto-Navigation System under the frame of module developmentis divided into four portions, including orientation module, navigation module,map-browser module and system setting module. Orientation module has two mainfunctions as data collection and data display. Navigation module provides informationinquiry, navigation simulation, path analysis and trace management. Map-browsermodule offers map switch, zoom in, zoon out and map cruise. Registration, serial portsetting and map selection make up of system setting module. The conclusive software test confirms that every module has achieved the designrequirements and fulfils the operation of vehicle navigation.
