Because telecommunication is developing rapidly and the approval of 3G licensehas been delayed for a long time, there is an EDGE network project appeared, whichis set up by Guangdong Mobile. EDGE is a kind of transition technology betweenSecond Generation and Third Generation. That is to say, we can use EDGE techniqueto offer the radio multimedia service to the mobile customers before the 3G business.EDGE is the abbreviation of Enhanced Data Rate for GSM Evolution. It is a newmodulating method, which is multi-time slot operation and 8PSK modulate technique,used in GSM system. Compare with GMSK modulate technique in GSM, 8PSKtechnique can increase four times signal space and improve the data service ratiogreatly.This paper selects the EDGE network project of Guangdong Mobile to beapplication research. We realize the EDGE technique by replacing the hardware ofmobile Base Transceiver Station, which is changed Transceiver Unit into superTransceiver Unit in radio equipment, updating the Distribution Switch Unit andrelevant software package, testing and analyzing the system performance especiallythe quality of network data communication after updating. In conclusion, through the research work and the project implement, now we'veproved that EDGE project is better than GPRS/CDMA in the areas of data transceiverradio, quality of service and so on. It really solves the increasing demand of dataservice of mobile customers. And it also proves that EDGE is a good practicalityproject in the transition of 3G. At the same time we realize the purpose of thecombination of research and application.
