Video monitoring system has been an important monitor method in the security market for a long time, It has been widely applied in security monitoring, production process monitoring, monitoring of residential areas and other areas. More and more users are interested in this system because of its remoteness. With technology of control and communication flourished and the great increase performance microprocessors and MPEG-4 standards can achieve DVD-class video quality of which the data stream amount is much lower than MPEG-2, the video monitor system that based on embedded MPEG-4 and has high definition, stable, multi-input and low-cost has broadly applied prospects. It is necessary to apply research on the system, and it has enormous social and economic benefits.This paper starts with analysis of monitoring way of video monitoring system and shows the system design by effectively combined advanced embedded technology with the technology of video and network. The project is divided into server and remote monitoring of two parts, the server complete video collection, conversion, MPEG-4 compression and network transmission, video recording;remote client complete video data reception, decoding, display, server control etc.The main part of this paper is the design of system software, and summarizes key technologies of embedded video monitoring system, including RTP protocol, DirectShow and Multithreading, and made a detailed presentation for these key technologies. The author divide system software into modules by the thinking of software design, and then detail the design of the various modules and the function of the main functions of the system.The research and design of this subject synthesizes multifold technologies, such as network, control, OOP, multithreading etc. The paper, through design and analysis an embedded video monitoring system, demonstrated the feasibility of the system and the way to implement the system, which having good flexibility and high reliability, the whole system is worth to popularize.
