As the significant progress of computer aided design and computer networks, network based collaborative assembly design has become one important research area in computer aided design. In this thesis, we work on the solid model simplification methods for collaborative assembly design.The solid model simplification method for collaborative assembly design has to meet the requirements on the accuracy of assembly interfaces in the simplified model. Meanwhile, it has to substantially simplify the solid model, reduce detailed information and hide information with business secrets.The small-face-depression based simplification method carries out the simplification through depressing small faces belonging to detailed information. Small faces are removed and simplification strategies are figured out through analyzing the wire frames left by these small faces. The construction of simplified model is done through strategies such as growing major faces next to small faces.The dimension-reduction based simplification method acquires the overall model shape information through sampling the model. The simplification is done through analyzing and modifying the sampling data. And the simplified model is constructed based on the modified sampling data. Our method reduces the dimension level of model shape information from three to two, which greatly facilitates the shape analyses.
