With the development of integrated circuit and signal processing technology, Digital Signal Processor (DSP) has been advanced enormously in many fields, such as manufacturing process and architecture. As a hotspot in modern application, multimedia processing also greatly promotes the development of DSP. DSP with high flexibility and good cost-performance ratio is especially suitable for multimedia processing fields.A DSP processor—MediaDSP16(MD16 for short) is developed by the Department of Information Science and Electronic Engineering in Zhejiang University, which has been successful fabricated under the condition of SMIC 0.18um, running from 0-162Mhz under 1.8V core voltage. On the base of MD16, the paper introduces the research on media processor architecture and application platform design. The paper uses audio application of MP3 and image application of JPEG2000 as examples to demonstrate media application system development based on MD16.In this paper, multimedia extension of MD16 processor architecture is proposed, and bitstream oriented instruction extension is put forward. In order to evaluate and develop media processing system based on MD16, a hardware/software co-designed application platform for DSP is suggested. Using reconfigurable board system, unified bus-based FPGA system, reusable IP module, reconfigurable and reusable hardware platform is designed. Function testing and the performance evaluating of MD16 processor are implemented on this platform.MP3 is most popular music file format at present. The paper proposes a hardware/software co-optimization approach for embedded software depending on processor architecture and algorithm. Using this approach for software optimization of MP3 decoder, the program and data code requirememts can meet hardware constraints, and computation complexity needs can be greatly reduced. Based on MD16 application platform, MP3 decoding hardware system is designed by IP reusing and integrating. Audio playing mechanism is also optimized in hardware system.JPEG2000 is new still image codec standard. The paper concerns the research on key algorithm of JPEG2000 based on DSP.After performance analysis of JPEG2000 modules, the paper exploits the parallism in time and space domain, implements and optimizes the DWT and EBCOT tier1 algorithms based on MD16.
