In recent years, virtual reality technology is widely used in the area of computer emulation studying. It enables users to view and experience the virtual environment freely. During the process of virtual campus walkthrough, collision detection is the vital interaction base between dynamic object and static object or among the dynamic objects. Also fast and high-efficient collision detection plays an important role in strengthening immersion and reality sense of virtual scene.Based on the campus of HuaZhong Normal University as a virtual space, develop virtual three-dimensional browse environment based on VEGA platform. The collision detection during virtual walkthrough process is discussed in this paper. Hierarchical bounding is a most widely used algorithm of collision detection. The common bounding box comprises of Sphere, AABB (Axis-Aligned Bounding Boxes), OBB (Oriented Bounding Box), K-DOP (Discrete Orientation Polytopes). The algorithms of those bounding boxes above are also discussed in this paper. Taking the fountain in front of library of HuaZhong Normal University as example, it analyses particle system and related collision detection in this paper, and implement real-time splash effect. So considering collision detection method and some special requirements, the bounding box algorithm of collision detection described in this paper is chosen to apply to the virtual campus walkthrough.Developing virtual campus system of HuaZhong Normal University based on VEGA platform, the collision detection between current terrain and existing building is well achieved during the whole virtual walkthrough process. And it well strengthens immersion and reality sense of virtual scene.
