The application of high-resolution satellite images becomes more and more extensive with the development of remote sensing technology. It is a necessary task to remove effects of cloud cover to get clearer images before the application of the images.This paper studies the methods of removing light cloud cover from remote sensing images by image processing, discusses and improves the processing methods of thick cloud based on the traditional ways of cloud removal. Process the light cloud cover of remote sensing image based on the way of mathematical morphology that this paper proposes and get perfect effect compared to the traditional ways.The work of this paper mainly embodies aspects as follows:1. This paper summarizes the basic ideas of removing light cloud cover, discusses and improves the ways of removing light cloud cover of traditional remote sensing image and gets perfect effect by experiment.2. Mathematical morphology has been introduced to the processing of removing light cloud cover of remote sensing image by applying the filtering character of the close and open operation of Mathematical morphology.( 1) Discusses the effects of different structure elements, applies multi-structural elements mathematical morphology to light cloud cover and get perfect effect in experiment of processing gray remote sensing image.(2) By introducing mathematical morphology procession of color remote sensing images to the traditional channel procession and the HIS transform, the aim of light cloud removal could be achieved.(3) The coved region of thick cloud of IKONOS image has been replaced and repaired by using the aerial photo of the same region .The correction of radiation difference of the replaced image and the joint of mosaic image have been discussed through correcting and replacing of image by MATLAB.(4) The effect of removing light cloud cover has been evaluated both by visual evaluation and statistic analysis .The mean gray, standard deviation, entropy, SNR of peak value and mean absolute deviation have been introduced as statistic analysis indexes.Based on the study and discussion of cloud cover removal of remote sensing image, experiments show the method proposed by this paper has certain application values in the processing of cloud cover of remote sensing image. It is possible to apply the mathematical morphology to the removing light cloud of remote sensing image, and it's effect is better than traditional processing ways if the structure element or generalized structure element are properly selected according to the objects' characteristic of light cloud cover of processed image.
