ForCES (Forwarding and Control Element Separation) is a working group in IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) routing area, specialized in the research of the architecture and protocols of open programmable routers. To make the next generation networks open, scalable and programmable, ForCES has proposed an open programmable router architecture with the physical separation of the Forwarding Element (FE) and the Control Element (CE). ForCES advocates new and programmable network processors to implement FEs to satisfy both performance and flexibility requirements on routers. The research team we now work on engaged in the implementation and standardization of the ForCES protocol. This thesis is based on National 863 High-Tech Fund Research on Open Programmable Router Protocol (GRMP) that Supports Multi-Service Switch. It primarily researches on the methods of inter-FE communication in a ForCES router to solve the transmission problem of packets forwarded by non-local FEs. Firstly, on the basis of comparison of researches on inter-FE communication mechanism in ForCES working group and NPF (Network Processing Forum), we propose an inter-FE packet transmission method independent of the physical interconnect technology. It allows system designers to customize the information transmitted with packets between multiple FEs coming from various vendors. Secondly, this thesis implements two important blocks in the ForCES FE based on IXP2400 network processor. They are MD-Encap LFB (MetaData-Encapsulation Logical Function Block) and MD-Decap LFB (MetaData-Decapsulation Logical Function Block), whose purpose is to...
