The gossip mechanism could support reliable and scalable communica-tion in large-scale settings. In large-scale peer-to-peer environment, however, each node could only have partial knowledge of the group membership. Moreseriously, because the node has no global knowledge about the underlyingtopology, gossip mechanism incurs much unnecessary network overhead onthe Internet. We present Genius, a novel peer-to-peer location-aware gossip.Unlike many previous location-aware techniques which utilize BGP or otherrouter-level topology information, Genius uses the network coordinates mapproduced by Vivaldi (a distributed network coordinate system) as the under-lying topology information. By utilizing the information, Genius could exe-cute near-preferential gossip, that is, the node should be told the gossip mes-sage by nodes as close as possible, through which much unnecessary'long-range' communication cost could be reduced. Further, the node direc-tion information inherited in the coordinate space is exploited. We presentpreliminary experimental results which prove the feasibility of our scheme. The primary contributions of this paper are the following:1. It studies the location-aware technology in peer-to-peer group com-munication mechanism.2. It presents Genius, a peer-to-peer location-aware gossip using networkcoordinates without the help of network-layer information.2. It proposes an approach to cluster nodes in the coordinate space in adecentralized manner. This work is supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China(Object-Oriented Cluster Storage, No.60273006).
